CrossFit has become very popular these days, and those who are into it are just about everywhere. You may have seen them on TV, or shopped next to them at a grocery store, seen a few of their “WOD” (workout of the day) snaps on Instagram, and you may even be living with one (unless you’re completely oblivious). These people can be anyone—mothers, students, professional athletes, you name it. More and more individuals are starting to proudly call themselves “CrossFitters”. In fact, one of the best reasons for joining a Roanoke, VA CrossFit box is the sense of community that members develop.
For the uninitiated, CrossFit is an exercise program developed to allow a full-body workout which combines cardio, weight lifting, gymnastics, core training, and more, to push the body to the limits and “prepare for the unexpected1”. If you feel like you’re due for a lifestyle change, CrossFit can help you. Before you join a Roanoke CrossFit “box” (aka gym) like Roanoke Valley CrossFit, however, it would be good to know more about the basics of this training program.
There’s No “Magic Formula”
CrossFit Games head honcho Dave Castro stresses that the essence of the sport is “constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movement”, and that it does not work on some “magic formula”. The program is all about variations in the workout and movements, and the intensity at which they are performed
Recover, Recover, Recover
What you do on rest days is very important to the program. Take care of your body all the time, get enough sleep, eat right, maintain adequate mobility, and so on. It’s easy to go overboard in the beginning, but if you do, remind yourself to never do it again. In CrossFit, rest days are golden.
You Don’t Need Specialized Gear for CrossFit
Perhaps the most important thing to focus on in CrossFit is mobility, since you’re working out your entire body. Regular workout clothes and gym shoes are all you need to get started, provided that your movement is not hampered in any way. All the special gear you’ll need during your workout will likely be provided by the box, so you can basically wear almost anything you want for training day.
Warm Up Each Time
Warming up before everything else is something you should never, ever forget. A proper warm up routine can help your performance a lot while also reducing the chances of injury. It can also help prepare your mind for the challenges that lie ahead.
